This position will work a hybrid schedule which is a combination of working onsite on Campus and Remote.


Under limited supervision, uses skills and experience as a seasoned, experienced professional with a comprehensive understanding of the interactive process and University policies and procedures. Demonstrates good judgment in review of confidential information to identify methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and developing recommendations related to need for accommodations. Responsible for the provision of recommendations for reasonable accommodations and management of medical disability related matters including but not limited to vocational counseling, job analysis, medical separation, disability counseling, and job reassignment for staff and faculty employees who have a physical or mental disability impacting the ability to stay at work / return to work or perform the essential job functions. Interaction with all levels of the Campus and Systemwide Administration, as well as communicating with employees and supervisors / managers and providing training / education about state and federal laws and UC Policy. General instructions may be provided on new assignments, projects and initiatives.


  • Strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong in-depth knowledge of organization policies and procedures; knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the organization's employee benefits function and programs and can address unique circumstances as well as routine situations.

  • Demonstrated strong writing, speaking, and group presentation skills in order to present information in a clear and concise manner to multiple levels in the organization.

  • In-depth knowledge of all benefits programs in order to provide information and interpretation.

  • Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of various counseling theories and techniques.

  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Amendments, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, California Fair Employment & Housing Act, California State Labor Code, Section 132A.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and medical reports and their respective implications for reasonable accommodation and placement.

  • Ability to conduct job analyses to recommend reasonable accommodations, and to compare functional capacity to job requirements.

  • Ability to provide reasonable accommodation recommendations.

  • Ability to explain and persuade in a concise manner and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in problem identification and problem solving techniques.

  • Ability to identify and coordinate resources to meet program objectives effectively.

  • Ability to design, organize and present a training presentation and other learning opportunities.

  • Knowledge of program planning and ability to set priorities.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people in an environment of frequently changing priorities.

  • Proven knowledge of career development practices and demonstrated skill in career counseling.

  • Demonstrated group process skills to facilitate participant interaction and feedback training presentations.

  • Proven conceptual and oral communication skills to explain university and local Campus Academic Personnel and Human Resources policies and procedures and contract articles as related to preventing and managing disabilities and providing vocational rehabilitation services.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, originality, and judgment in applying established principles to new and unusual problems.

  • Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.


  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
