THE POSITION

Brooklyn Friends School’s dance spaces provide welcoming, vibrant learning environments that nurture passion for inquiry, inspire creativity and movement, and instruct and support students and teachers in multiple layers of movement and dance education. 

Primary Responsibilities Include:

This position reports to the Head of Lower School. 

  • Teach dance classes to students in Lower (Grades K-4) and Middle School (Grades 5 and/or 6).
  • In collaboration with the school administration, the Performing Arts Chair, teachers, and specialists, develop and implement a current and relevant lower grades dance curriculum with a focus on creative movement and dance technique
  • Collaborate with the Performing Arts Department and Dance colleagues on campus-wide initiatives to promote the dance program
  • Collaborate with specialists and classroom teachers in developing cross-curricular connections
  • Develop, manage, and promote dance events for Lower and Middle Schools, and partner with dance colleagues on events in other divisions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of dance program advances through participation in professional organizations and professional development
  • Maintain assessment and progress report work for students and families, in conjunction with other dance colleagues and specialist teachers. 
  • Support the academic/social/emotional development of all students
  • Collaborate well with colleagues to plan, create, and implement curriculum
  • Communicate effectively with families with regard to all aspects of classroom life and child development
  • Share supervisory duties and general support and care of the school community  
  • Perform necessary routine tasks and daily maintenance of the classroom
  • Attendance at Colleague meetings, divisional curriculum meetings, department meetings, and some evening and weekend events 
  • Serves as an active community member that is highly collaborative and partners well with teachers, families, administration, and students 

Qualifications and Characteristics Sought:

  • Bachelor of Arts in the subject or related area required; Master of Arts in the subject or another field (preferred)
  • A desire to bring the joy of movement and dance education to young children 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a performing arts-based organization, school, or educational setting
  • 3-5 years teaching experience (preferred) 
  • Has strong classroom management skills 
  • Is invested in continued professional growth 
  • A knowledge of current dance practices, technique, and educational resources for students in younger grades
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Approaches work with flexibility, patience, grace, connection, and a willingness to learn 
  • Demonstrates cultural competency and a commitment to diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion
  • Brings a passion and desire to create a joyful learning environment

Physical Requirements of the Job: 

  • Must be able to work in an office environment including prolonged periods of sitting and standing.
  • Must be able to stand, bend over, twist and reach to access file cabinets, bookshelves and navigate office and workstation spaces.
  • Must be able to ambulate through a classroom setting, including walking up stairs.
  • Must be able to lift and carry small children up to 40lbs in the case of emergency.

Union Status : Union 

Salary Range: $70,500 - $94,490

This salary range represents the expected annual salary range for this position. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your education level, experience, and other job-related factors.
